Summary of OMECC conference from CUPE 3175 President, Shannon Parker.
On March 30- Roslynn Blodgett and myself attended the first Public Health workers Forum. There was representation from approx. 16 health units/public healths, across Ontario. Discussed were common/like issues around funding, work load, job cuts and restructuring. Recognition to changes in government funding and distribution of funding (LHIN involvement). President of CUPE ON, Fred Haan, participated in discussion on being proactive and voicing our concerns to government decision makers re: funding freezes.
From March 31-April 2- was OMECC (Ontario Municipal Employees Coordinating Conference), approximately 250 voting delegates attended. Health and Safety was a highlighted focus of the conference. Brother Paul Norris was acclaimed to be our Representative for our Local District Labour Council. We had a working group with some of our fellow area CUPE Locals, discussed contract negotiations, workload and changes to work environments. Highlights to the conference included the recognition of Mental Health challenges on workers and removing stigma within. Also recognizing the campaign created by the Paramedics of CUPE, lobbying government to recognize PTSD as workplace illness for first line responders.
Another successful and beneficial conference! If anyone would like further information on the OMECC conference, please feel free and contact Roslynn Blodgett (Secretary of Local 3175) or myself, Shannon Parker (President Local 3175).
